Skyridge hosts No. 1 Corner Canyon at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, with the Falcons riding a three-match win streak into a No. 1-vs.-No. 2 Region 3 matchup.
The Falcons sit at 18-4 overall and No. 2 in the Class 6A rankings after going 3-1 in the first round of league play, according to the Lehi Free Press. Five regular-season matches remain.
Corner Canyon swept Skyridge 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 on Sept. 15 in Draper. The Chargers jumped to a 10-3 lead in the opening set, the Deseret News reported. Senior outside hitter Emma White led Skyridge with eight kills, eight digs and 27 serve-receives in the loss. Senior libero Estelle Slaney added 12 digs.
Two days later, the Falcons answered. Skyridge rallied past Lone Peak 3-2 at home on Sept. 17 after dropping the first set 25-16. Lone Peak also took the third set 25-20, but Skyridge won the second 25-18, the fourth 25-22 and the decisive fifth 15-13.
Eight Falcons recorded kills. Junior middle blocker Emmie Mahe led with 11 kills and three blocks. White added 10 kills, 20 digs and 43 serve-receives. Junior outside hitter Sienna Kuresa chipped in eight kills, two aces, 16 digs and 21 serve-receives. Slaney anchored the back row with 24 digs.
Head coach Siale Hifo's squad has shown that comeback ability before. After a five-set win over Mountain Ridge on Aug. 20, Hifo told the Deseret News, "I'm really proud of them, because it's hard to go down two sets and knowing that the next set could be the deal breaker."
Skyridge followed the Lone Peak win with back-to-back sweeps. On Sept. 22, the Falcons dispatched visiting Lehi 25-14, 25-16, 25-17. Kuresa led the attack with 11 kills and four aces. Senior outside hitter Anzlee Holt added 10 kills, and setter Allyceia Maae distributed 24 assists.
The next night at American Fork, Skyridge won 25-18, 25-15, 25-19. Holt topped the chart with eight kills and three block-assists. White served five aces, and Slaney dug 17 balls.
Corner Canyon has swept both Skyridge and Lehi in region play this season. After the Sept. 15 win over Skyridge, Corner Canyon head coach Mindy Ricks said her players feel the target that comes with the No. 1 ranking.
"That pressure helps us when we work on our mindset and recognizing that the pressure is a privilege," Ricks said.
After the Oct. 1 match, Skyridge travels to Lone Peak on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
