Skyridge High product Kaneal Sweetwyne is part of a quarterback shakeup at Colorado, where Isaac Wilson is expected to start Saturday, Oct. 3, against No. 12 Texas Tech.

CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz reported on X on Tuesday, Sept. 29, that Wilson is "currently expected" to start when the Buffaloes host the Red Raiders at 5:30 p.m. MDT on Fox. ESPN confirmed Wilson has been taking first-team reps in practice.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders told reporters Tuesday, Sept. 29, he has not made a final decision and will evaluate practice before committing. But he made clear both Wilson and Sweetwyne factor into his plans.

"If (Wilson) gets the nod, I feel all out he's going to do his thing. Sweetwyne as well," Sanders said, per DNVR Buffs.

Sanders explained after Colorado's Saturday, Sept. 26, loss at Baylor why he turned to Wilson rather than Sweetwyne when starter Julian Lewis struggled. He called Sweetwyne "more of a long-term type of thought process" and said Wilson would "get us in the right positions."

Wilson, a junior who played at Corner Canyon High in Draper and spent two seasons at the University of Utah, replaced Lewis at halftime of the Baylor game. The Deseret News reported Wilson completed 12 of 25 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in the second half. He led back-to-back scoring drives that tied the game at 13-13 before Baylor pulled away.

Wilson is the younger brother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Zach Wilson. As a true freshman at Utah in 2024, he threw for 1,510 yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Sweetwyne, a true freshman listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, enrolled early at Colorado in January after leaving Skyridge midway through his senior year. He transferred to Skyridge from Orem High and played 45 career games for the Falcons under head coach Justin Hemm, starting two seasons.

As a junior, Sweetwyne completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,675 yards and 19 touchdowns in 13 games while rushing for 930 yards and 10 scores. Skyridge reached the 5A state semifinals that year. As a senior, he raised his completion rate to 67 percent, threw 32 touchdown passes and rushed for 911 yards as the Falcons moved up to 6A and again reached the semifinals.

Sweetwyne got his first college snaps in Colorado's 52-21 win over Weber State on Sept. 12, entering in the third quarter. He completed 7 passes for 35 yards and scored on a 9-yard rushing touchdown. He had beaten out Wilson for the backup job behind Lewis heading into that game.

That pecking order shifted at Baylor.

Colorado enters Saturday's game at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. The Buffaloes have scored just 34 points in three games against FBS opponents. After the Texas Tech game and a bye week, Colorado hosts No. 13 Utah on Oct. 17, a game where Wilson could face his former team.
