Utah tech companies along the I-15 corridor have roughly three years to overhaul their encryption before quantum computers can crack it wide open, speakers warned at a briefing in Lehi on Friday, July 17.

Silicon Slopes Quantum, a newly formed chapter of the Silicon Slopes trade organization, held its second meeting at Silicon Slopes headquarters with a session titled "Zero-Day-Q: Navigating the Quantum Cliff." The event brought together federal officials, blockchain leaders, and cybersecurity executives to lay out a timeline: by mid-2029, quantum machines will be capable of breaking the public-key encryption that protects most digital data, according to accelerated projections from Google, IBM, Cloudflare, and Microsoft, panelists said.

"With Y2K, nothing major broke because companies spent billions of dollars behind the scenes fixing two-digit dates into four-digit dates," said Sumit Parashar, founding chair of Silicon Slopes Quantum and CEO of Lehi-based BODEX. "Q-Day is a similar problem, but with one key difference: it's defined by a capability threshold rather than a fixed calendar year."

Parashar, who worked on Y2K date-conversion fixes earlier in his career, framed the threat as a cliff rather than a slope. Encryption holds until a hardware threshold is crossed, then collapses rapidly, he said. Google formally set its own post-quantum migration deadline at 2029 in a March 25, 2026, blog post, citing faster-than-expected progress in quantum hardware and error correction.

The briefing also addressed "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later," a strategy in which adversaries copy encrypted data with the expectation of decrypting it once quantum capability arrives. Parashar said this activity is already underway, citing a 2020 traffic-rerouting incident that redirected data from Google, Amazon, and Facebook through Russian networks as an example of the pattern. CISA and the NSA have separately identified HNDL as an active threat.

Trent Staggs, former Riverton mayor and SBA Region 8 Regional Advocate, highlighted two executive orders President Trump signed on Monday, June 22, 2026. EO 14412 requires federal agencies and covered contractors to migrate high-value systems to post-quantum cryptography by December 31, 2030. The mandate reaches beyond Washington. Any Utah company holding a federal contract will need to comply with NIST's new post-quantum algorithms by that same deadline.

Staggs called the transition a commercial opportunity for local startups, noting that Small Business Investment Company licenses, which allow private funds to leverage SBA-backed capital, can help venture groups back early-stage teams tackling post-quantum migration. He proposed a Quantum Pitch Competition to connect cybersecurity founders with venture capital and federal transition resources.

Aaron Gleave, executive director of the Utah Blockchain Coalition, joined a fireside chat on how quantum disruption hits decentralized networks differently. Security updates can't be pushed from a central IT department, Gleave said. They require consensus among miners, validators, developers, and node operators.

The session closed with four action items for local organizations: build a cryptographic inventory of all public-key assets, transition to NIST-standardized post-quantum algorithms finalized in August 2024, engineer systems for "cryptographic agility" so security protocols can be swapped without rewriting core code, and connect with SBA Region 8 for grant pathways.
