Darren Jones wanted to know who to vote for, so he built a website to figure it out.
Jones, a lifetime Lehi resident and entrepreneur, launched MyVotingTool.com during the summer of 2026 after struggling to research candidates on his own. The free site lets voters create profiles, rank the issues they care about and compare candidates based on stated positions and voting records.
"This summer when I reviewed the candidates, I realized that I did not recognize many of their names, know where to find reliable information, or even know who to contact with questions," Jones told the Lehi Free Press.
Jones said he wanted to make an informed decision but needed a starting point. That frustration led him to purchase the MyVotingTool.com domain and build the platform himself.
The tool, which Jones describes as nonpartisan, includes what he calls a "chameleon score." The feature highlights shifts in a candidate's positions over time. Jones said the concept helps voters weigh consistency, context and alignment over a long period. Users set their own comparison criteria, and the site does not promote any party, candidate or ideology, according to Jones.
Jones is no stranger to building things. He founded Alpine Innovations, a Lehi-based outdoor products company at 275 North 950 East State St., in 2001 after inventing a fly-line cleaning tool on a fishing trip. The company now holds more than 25 patents on products including the Spudz lens-care line and the Stripee finger guard for anglers. He also developed Life Inspire Technologies.
Before the wider launch, Jones shared the voter site with a small group of users who found the information valuable, according to the Lehi Free Press. He said his goal is to give anyone with similar questions a free starting point for making informed voting decisions.
Utah's general election is approaching. The tool is available at MyVotingTool.com.
