Highland City is giving away free sand and sandbags to residents concerned about flooding after the remnants of Hurricane Rachel brought rain to the Wasatch Front.
The city announced the program in a post on X on Tuesday, Oct. 13, acknowledging that some Highland neighborhoods face potential flood risk. Residents who want to pick up sand or sandbags can call 801-772-4515 during business hours. After hours, the number is 801-420-2553.
"… We understand that residents in some areas of Highland may be concerned about potential flooding," the city wrote. "If you would like to pick up sand or sandbags, please call 801-772-4515 during business hours."
The city's post also noted gratitude for what it called "much-needed rain," a nod to drought conditions that preceded the storm system.
Highland City Hall is located at 5400 W. Civic Center Drive, Suite 1. Office hours run Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The office is closed Fridays. The city's general phone number is 801-756-5751, according to the Highland City website. The after-hours emergency number listed on the website, 801-420-2553, matches the one the city posted for sandbag pickups.
The sandbag program follows a wave of similar efforts across the region. ABC4 reported Oct. 9 that cities along the Wasatch Front were making sandbags available as the remnants of Hurricane Rachel moved toward Utah. ABC4's weather team forecast 1 to 3 inches of precipitation, with areas along and northwest of the storm seeing the heaviest rain and the Wasatch Front directly in its path.
Several nearby cities set up their own distribution points ahead of the storm. Eagle Mountain directed residents to call an emergency utilities hotline, Pleasant Grove offered pre-filled bags at a public works site and Lindon made sand available for residents to fill bags themselves.
Highland's post did not specify how many sandbags are available per household or whether the program has an end date. The city also did not name which neighborhoods are most at risk.
Residents who spot flooding in Highland can call 801-772-4515 during business hours or 801-420-2553 after hours to report it.
