Skyridge freshman Jraice Finau shot a 1-under 71 at the Region 3 boys golf tournament Wednesday, Oct. 7. His round at Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in Orem led the Falcons to a fourth-place team finish.
Finau placed fifth individually to pace Skyridge, which posted a combined 293, according to the Lehi Free Press. Lehi won the tournament at 281, followed by Corner Canyon at 284 and Lone Peak at 287. American Fork rounded out the five-team field at 303.
The result was a step forward. Skyridge sat fifth in Region 3 team standings through the regular season before climbing a spot at the region tournament.
Junior Landon Makin carded a 73 for the Falcons' second-best score. Senior Tanner Porter followed at 74. Three Skyridge golfers tied at 75 to complete the team's counted total: junior Klive Fuhriman, junior Hayes Mauss and sophomore Beckham Bell.
Sophomore Bridger Warr turned in a 76 and sophomore Dylan Hymas shot 78.
Finau has been Skyridge's most consistent player all season. Through eight weeks of Region 3 play, he carried a 70.5 stroke average, according to Deseret News region recaps. Fuhriman ranked just behind him at 71.0.
The 1-under round at the region tournament was not a one-off for Finau. He also shot 71 at the final regular-season meet Sept. 21 at Riverbend Golf Course in Riverton, where Skyridge finished fifth with a 296.
The Falcons also competed in the Region 3 match play tournament during the final weeks of the season. Skyridge advanced past American Fork in a scorecard playoff on Sept. 24 before falling to Lehi 4.5-3.5 in the semifinals on Sept. 28. Match play results do not count toward state standings.
The Falcons head to the 6A State Tournament on Monday, Oct. 12, and Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Talons Cove Golf Club in Saratoga Springs.
