Lehi hosts Lone Peak for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 8, with a 7 p.m. kickoff and a second-place Region 3 finish at stake.
The Pioneers (5-3, 1-1 Region 3) enter the game riding back-to-back wins over ranked opponents. They beat previously undefeated No. 3 Herriman 22-20 on Friday, Sept. 25, and then won 20-19 at No. 6 American Fork on Oct. 2.
Senior quarterback Briggs Jensen connected with senior tight end Zeke Clements for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:01 left in the American Fork game. Sophomore defensive back Eli Cole sealed it with an interception on the final drive.
Lehi sits in a three-way tie for second in Region 3 at 1-1 alongside American Fork and Corner Canyon, according to Lehi Free Press. The Pioneers hold the No. 7 spot in the 6A RPI rankings. A loss Thursday would hurt their chances at a favorable playoff seed with only one region game remaining.
Lone Peak (3-5, 0-3 Region 3) needs a win to avoid going winless in league play. The Knights have lost three straight region games, but all three were competitive.
They fell 28-24 to American Fork on Sept. 24 in a finish where receiver Jaxon Cloward appeared to catch a game-winning touchdown on the final play, but officials ruled the ball did not cross the goal line, according to the Daily Herald. They lost 27-24 to Skyridge on Oct. 2 after quarterback Ledger Holmes orchestrated a fourth-quarter comeback to tie the game 24-24 with 1:09 left, only for Skyridge kicker Evan Kopp to hit a 19-yard field goal as time expired.
Holmes is the player to watch for Lone Peak. He caught three passes for 117 yards and rushed twice for 34 yards including a touchdown in the American Fork loss. Receiver Dillon Sykes and sophomore linebacker Kingston Stroshine, who had 15 tackles, three for loss and a sack against American Fork, anchor the Knights on both sides of the ball.
For Lehi, junior running back Cam Bryce carried 23 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns against American Fork. Senior Cam Wren returned three kickoffs for 150 yards, including a 59-yard return that set up a scoring drive. The defense leans on senior linebackers Colt Kelley, Brody Downs and Paul Unga, senior defensive end Sterling Fillmore and senior defensive lineman Tautai Meredith.
"The gauntlet continues … We've got to go into these final games with the underdog mentality," Lehi head coach Andy Hadfield told Lehi Free Press on Oct. 5, after the Pioneers' win at American Fork. "Lone Peak is going to try to ruin our senior night like we did theirs last year."
Noland Parry's Power Guide in the Deseret News lists Lone Peak as an 8.8-point favorite for the Thursday game.
After Thursday's game, Lehi travels to Corner Canyon (6-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. to close out the regular-season region schedule.
