Lehi-based Regalo Theatre Co. opens back-to-back productions of "Twelve Angry Men" and "Twelve Angry Women" on Friday, Oct. 9, in Provo.
The company, co-founded by husband-and-wife team Colleen and Michael Carrasco of Lehi, says the twin run is a Utah first: a single theater company producing both the all-male and all-female versions of Reginald Rose's courtroom drama in the same season. The 12-performance run continues through Oct. 24, with six performances of each show, Lehi Free Press reported.
"We've seen many instances of a mixed cast of men and women with the show 'Twelve Angry Jurors' but as far as we've been able to research, there hasn't been a show that has run both concurrently and simultaneously," producer Christopher d'Argy told Lehi Free Press.
Rose wrote the original script as a teleplay for Studio One in 1954. The stage adaptation "Twelve Angry Women" uses the same script but shifts the cast to an all-female jury.
Michael Carrasco directs both productions. Colleen Carrasco handles costume design, with Amy Handy as assistant costume designer and d'Argy producing.
The stripped-down staging leans entirely on the actors. No special effects, no scene changes, no action sequences.
Venue search pushes company to Provo
Regalo calls Lehi home, but the company has struggled to find an affordable local venue. D'Argy said the lack of viable performance spaces pushed the company to The Hive Collaborative, a black box theater and arts education center in Provo. He added that the company is grateful to have a place where the shows can be produced while it searches for a permanent Lehi space.
The company has been active since 2022 and previously staged a production of "Amadeus," according to a Hale Centre Theatre program that listed a Regalo cast member's credits.
"In staging the same story with two completely separate casts, we get two chances to dig into what the play is really asking: what does it mean to actually listen? To disagree well? To take responsibility for the judgments we make about someone else?" d'Argy said.
