A 54-year-old man who had previously been banned from Lone Peak High School now faces seven charges after police say he entered the Highland school twice on Aug. 10, stole items and walked into the women's restroom while people were inside.

Justin Lane Hopkins was charged with burglary, a third-degree felony, along with voyeurism, theft with prior convictions, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, criminal trespass, lewdness and littering, according to charging documents reported by ABC4.

Lone Peak Police received a trespass report on Aug. 12. Officers reviewed surveillance footage and determined Hopkins had entered the school building two separate times two days earlier, on Aug. 10, while events were taking place inside.

Police say Hopkins took an hourglass, a book-shaped box, a can of soda and a drawstring backpack. The stolen items totaled approximately $500.

Hopkins also allegedly entered a women's restroom inside the school twice while people were present. He opened an exterior door and urinated outside, then held the door open for another person to enter the building, according to charging documents.

Hopkins had previously been trespassed from the school. Signs throughout the building direct visitors to check in at the front office.

Suspect found at Highland Glen Park

After reviewing the footage, Lone Peak Police located Hopkins at an encampment in Highland Glen Park. He allegedly admitted to entering the school and taking the items, which officers recovered at the camp.

Officers also found a knife. Hopkins reportedly acknowledged he was on probation and was not permitted to possess a knife, leading to the weapons charge. Police noted garbage around the encampment, resulting in the littering charge.

Hopkins has a history of drug-related convictions dating to 2012. He pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance in January 2025.

Court dates

Hopkins is being held in the Utah County Jail. He had his initial court appearance Monday, Aug. 17, and has a waiver hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The incident occurred nine days before Alpine School District's first day of classes for grades 1-12 on Wednesday, Aug. 19. Lone Peak High School serves students in grades 10-12 from Alpine, Highland and Cedar Hills.
