Skyridge clinched the 6A Region 3 football title Wednesday, Oct. 14, beating American Fork 21-15 on Senior Night in Lehi. Across town, Lehi fell 34-7 at Corner Canyon to close the regular season at 5-5.
Both results set the stage for the 6A state playoffs, which begin Oct. 30.
Skyridge 21, American Fork 15
Junior running back Beckham Bennett scored twice in the first quarter to stake the Falcons to a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Jagger Fountaine connected with senior receiver Omarian Sanders for a third Skyridge touchdown in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 21-7.
American Fork's Nate Childs threw a touchdown pass to Zack Cowie and converted the two-point attempt in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-15. The Falcon defense held from there.
The win completed a perfect 4-0 Region 3 run for Skyridge. The Falcons finished the regular season 8-1 overall, ranked No. 2 in Utah and riding an eight-game winning streak, according to MaxPreps. Their only loss came in the Aug. 13 opener at Mountain Ridge.
Bennett has been the engine of Skyridge's region dominance. After scoring all three touchdowns in the Falcons' 27-24 win at Lone Peak on Oct. 2, he told the Lehi Free Press: "I don't focus too much on my scores, we just need enough to win, and I work hard to do my part."
He added two more scores Wednesday in the region-clinching win.
Head coach Justin Hemm's squad won its final four regular-season games by a combined margin of 106-81, beating Lehi, Corner Canyon, Lone Peak and American Fork in succession. Skyridge's 8-1 record and No. 2 state ranking position the Falcons well heading into the postseason.
Corner Canyon 34, Lehi 7
Corner Canyon controlled the game from the opening quarter. The Chargers scored 27 unanswered points across three quarters before Lehi got on the board.
Senior quarterback Briggs Jensen hit Cam Wren for a 7-yard touchdown with 6:57 remaining in the fourth quarter for the Pioneers' lone score, according to the Deseret News.
Lehi finished the regular season 5-5 overall and 1-3 in Region 3, good for third place. The Pioneers are ranked No. 10 in the state, according to MaxPreps, and carry a two-game losing streak into the postseason.
Coach Andy Hadfield expressed confidence in his team's trajectory earlier this season. After Lehi's 28-20 loss to Skyridge on Sept. 17, he told the Lehi Free Press: "If we're able to [keep improving each week], I wouldn't want to play us when the state tournament rolls around."
That tournament is here. The 6A state playoffs open Oct. 30, with championship games set for Nov. 20 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, according to Sports Illustrated.
Playoff brackets have not been released. Skyridge and Lehi will both learn their first-round matchups in the coming days.
