Krew Robinson's 51-yard punt return in the third quarter gave Lone Peak the lead for good. The Knights held on to beat Lehi 14-7 in a Region 3 football game Thursday, Oct. 8, spoiling the Pioneers' Senior Night at Lehi High School.
Lone Peak (4-5, 1-3 Region 3) entered the game ranked No. 18 in the state by KSL Sports and had dropped out of the Mountain West Top 25 after a 27-24 loss to Skyridge the previous week. The Knights looked like a different team Thursday night.
Lehi (5-4, 1-2) had been riding momentum into the matchup. The Pioneers debuted at No. 12 in the Mountain West Top 25 on Oct. 5 after back-to-back wins over Herriman and American Fork, and KSL ranked them No. 8 statewide.
Lone Peak struck first. Quarterback Caleb Brady found receiver Jaxon Cloward on a 13-yard touchdown pass at the 9:00 mark of the first quarter. Lehi answered in the second quarter when running back Sam Verbecky punched in a 1-yard score to tie it at 7-7.
The game stayed knotted until Robinson fielded a Lehi punt in the third quarter and raced 51 yards to the end zone. The Knights' defense did the rest, holding the Pioneers scoreless through the fourth quarter.
Lehi head coach Andy Hadfield had warned before the game that the Knights would be dangerous. "Lone Peak is going to try to ruin our senior night like we did theirs last year," Hadfield told the Lehi Free Press on Oct. 5. He praised Lone Peak's defensive coaching staff and predicted the Knights would bring heavy pressure. Robinson and the Lone Peak defense proved him right.
The loss drops Lehi to 1-2 in Region 3 play, while Lone Peak climbs to 1-3 after picking up its first region win. Skyridge (7-1, 3-0) leads the region. Corner Canyon (7-2) also won Thursday, routing American Fork 41-17 in the other region game of the night, according to the Deseret News.
Lehi travels to Corner Canyon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a 7 p.m. kickoff in the Pioneers' regular-season finale.
