Lehi's girls soccer team beat Herriman 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to advance to the 6A state quarterfinals, while Skyridge's season ended in a penalty shootout against top-seeded Lone Peak.
The No. 6 Pioneers led 1-0 at halftime and pulled away in the second half, as reported by the Lehi Free Press. Lehi added two more goals after the break before No. 11 Herriman scored late.
Eilley Baker and Aly Badger each found the net for Lehi, and Lillie Watson added a goal to bring her season total to 13, according to the Deseret News. Olivia Schoenfeld and Ashley Gardener each recorded an assist. Maliyah McGill scored Herriman's lone goal, assisted by Kaylee Carlson.
The win improved Lehi's record to 11-8. The Pioneers finished tied for second in Region 3 at 4-4.
Skyridge pushes Lone Peak to the limit
The other first-round matchup pitted two area programs against each other, and No. 16 Skyridge nearly pulled the upset.
The Falcons stunned the No. 1 Knights by scoring twice in the first half. Cambria Condie and Alexa Blood put Skyridge ahead 2-0 at the break. Lone Peak answered with second-half goals from Sasha Castro and Makayla Zukeran to force overtime.
Neither team scored in two extra periods.
Lone Peak won the shootout 3-0 to advance. The loss ended Skyridge's season at 2-14. The Falcons finished last in Region 3 at 1-7 under first-year head coach Jhoan Alvizo, but the playoff performance validated what Alvizo told the Lehi Free Press on Oct. 9 after the regular season: "We know we are capable of competing with the state's best; that is why we had the strongest strength of schedule of anyone in the state."
Lone Peak (14-3) entered the tournament as the top overall seed. The Knights had beaten Skyridge twice during the regular season.
