All three area girls soccer programs open the 6A state tournament Tuesday, Oct. 13, including a first-round matchup that pits two local schools against each other.
No. 16 Skyridge travels to No. 1 Lone Peak for a 4 p.m. kickoff in Highland. On the other side of the 6A bracket, No. 6 Lehi hosts No. 11 Herriman at 4 p.m. in Lehi. Winners advance to quarterfinal games Thursday, Oct. 15.
The Lone Peak-Skyridge game is the headliner. The Knights (14-3, 8-0 Region 3) ran the table in region play and carried a 13-game winning streak as of the Daily Herald's Oct. 5 Valley Top 5 rankings. Lone Peak is the top seed in 6A and ranked No. 90 nationally on MaxPreps.
Skyridge (2-13, 1-7) squeezed into the 16-team field as the final qualifier. The Falcons lost to the Knights twice in region play, 4-2 on Sept. 15 and 3-1 on Oct. 1. First-year head coach Jhoan Alvizo, a Spanish and Portuguese teacher at the school, has guided a rebuilding roster through a difficult season.
"Region 3 is always the region of death with so many good teams, but it gives us the challenge to make us play the best we can and really helps us prep for the knockout stages of the season," Alvizo said in an August preseason preview.
The Lone Peak-Skyridge winner will face either No. 8 Layton or No. 9 Mountain Ridge in the quarterfinals. Skyridge did not play either team during the regular season.
Lehi (10-8, 4-4) finished tied for second in Region 3 and earned the No. 6 seed. Third-year head coach Jonas Hartmann's Pioneers have scored 45 goals this season and allowed 24, per MaxPreps. Lehi beat Herriman 2-0 in a preseason match Aug. 13 and will look to repeat that result at home.
The Lehi-Herriman winner draws either No. 3 Farmington (11-5) or No. 14 Weber (7-11) in the quarterfinals. Lehi lost 3-2 at Weber on Aug. 25 but did not face Farmington this season.
Hartmann told the Lehi Free Press in August that he expected a deep playoff field. "… once we hit the playoffs there are no teams that can be taken lightly," he said at the time.
All 6A first-round games kick off at 4 p.m. Tuesday unless the schools agree to a different time. Quarterfinals follow Thursday, Oct. 15.
