Families looking for one more educational outing before Alpine School District classes resume Wednesday, Aug. 19, can step into a conservatory housing more than 1,000 live butterflies at Thanksgiving Point's Butterfly Biosphere in Lehi.

The venue, described as Utah's only butterfly conservatory, runs daily hands-on programs that connect kids to real entomology: Critter Encounters, Entomologist Chats, Bug Races, Butterfly Science Chats and Insect Investigators. A separate Discovery Zone holds hundreds of live insects, and a Community Insect Collection station lets children use magnifying glasses to observe and document specimens, mirroring citizen-science techniques used by working researchers.

All programs run daily.

Thanksgiving Point content creator Cloe Bentz framed the programming around five recent insect-science discoveries in a blog post published Aug. 13. Among them: seven new frog-like leafhopper species found in Uganda's Kibale National Park and a one-millimeter ladybird beetle, Parastethorus pinicola, identified on pine trees at Japan's Kyushu University. Researchers are also developing AI computer-vision tools to help identify species from photographs, though trained entomologists remain essential because different species can look nearly identical.

Bentz wrote that the unknowns in entomology mean today's children may someday help answer questions scientists haven't yet solved.

The Biosphere also hosts daily butterfly releases inside its air-conditioned conservatory, a draw for families seeking indoor activities during August heat. Thanksgiving Point says its educational approach at the venue encourages children to observe closely, ask questions and grow comfortable with uncertainty.

Alpine School District students in grades 1 through 12 return to class Wednesday, Aug. 19, according to ABC4. Kindergartners start Tuesday, Aug. 25.
