The Mountain America Museum of Ancient Life in Lehi now houses a fossil no other museum on Earth can claim.

"Need for Speed," a permanent exhibit that opened Monday, Aug. 10, inside the museum's Jurassic Hall, puts visitors face-to-face with the world's only known Tanycolagreus specimen. The long-limbed Jurassic predator, unearthed from the Morrison Formation, has never been displayed anywhere else.

The exhibit also features a newly mounted Ceratosaurus, recognizable by the horn on its snout and large blade-like teeth, and a nearly complete adult Allosaurus that lived roughly 150 million years ago. That adult now stands alongside the museum's famous juvenile Allosaurus jimmadseni, a specimen discovered in 2002 by Rick Hunter, Thanksgiving Point's director of paleontology who has held the role for more than 20 years. Seeing both fossils side by side lets visitors observe the animal at different life stages.

Beyond the bones, the exhibit leans into hands-on science. Visitors can use magnifiers to compare dinosaur teeth, draw prehistoric creatures at a paleoart station based on fossil evidence, examine real fossils and interact with digital displays featuring movement, sound and animation. The approach mirrors the inquiry process real paleontologists use, according to Thanksgiving Point's announcement, pushing guests past "What dinosaur is that?" toward questions about how the animals moved and hunted.

The museum, located at 2929 N. Thanksgiving Way along the I-15 corridor, already holds one of the world's largest collections of mounted dinosaurs with 60 complete skeletons. Need for Speed adds three major specimens to that lineup.

Admission runs $24 online for adults, $19 for youth ages 13–17, $17 for children 3–12 and $21 for seniors 65 and older. Children 2 and under enter free. Thanksgiving Point members get in at no additional cost. The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and requires advance time-ticketed admission.

Families visiting before Saturday, Aug. 22, can also grab a $39 All-Access Pass that covers all seven Thanksgiving Point venues for three consecutive days.
