Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills and Lehi residents can breathe easy: the emergency evacuation alert that lit up phones Sunday afternoon, Aug. 9, was sent in error.

The false notification reached devices across Utah County, Wasatch County, Salt Lake County, Uintah County and parts of Summit and Morgan counties at about 4:50 p.m., according to ABC4. No one in Utah County needs to evacuate.

Uintah County Emergency Management identified the cause as a glitch in the Park City Dispatch system that pushed the alert far beyond its intended audience. Multiple county emergency management offices, including Utah County and Wasatch County, posted clarifications on social media within minutes.

What's actually happening

The only legitimate evacuation orders Sunday are tied to the Rocky Canyon Fire burning in Morgan and Summit counties, roughly 60 miles north of Alpine. That fire was mapped at 2,800 acres with 0% containment as of Sunday morning, according to KSL.

Residents under a mandatory GO evacuation order live between Whites Crossing and East Canyon Dam on the fire's south end. A second zone, from the Summit County line at Hogback Summit to West Henefer Road, is also under GO status. The rest of Henefer is in READY status, meaning residents should prepare but do not yet need to leave.

Summit County officials issued a formal correction at 5:13 p.m. Sunday, clarifying that only those limited zones are affected. According to KUTV, the county stated that all other areas "can disregard" the alert.

State Route 66 is closed to all traffic due to the fire, and State Route 65 from Henefer is also closed. A shelter for evacuees is open at Morgan High School's Trojan Century Center, 699 E. Young St. in Morgan.

What local residents should do

Nothing. If you received the alert and live in Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills or Lehi, you are safe and can disregard the message entirely. The Rocky Canyon Fire's evacuation zones are in Morgan and Summit counties, well north of Utah County.

Residents near the fire who need updates could attend a community meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the LDS meetinghouse at 709 N Main St. in Henefer.

Alpine Days runs through Saturday, Aug. 15, at Creekside Park (100 S 600 E) in Alpine. The celebration marks Alpine's 175th anniversary and includes a rodeo, parade, carnival, car show and movie in the park. Many events are free; the rodeo and carnival are ticketed.
