A multi-story stained-glass structure with more than 10,000 square feet of handcrafted glass panels will be built at Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, organizers announced Aug. 11.

The King and Diane Husein Sphere of Light, created by Lehi-based Holdman Studios, will feature more than 300 panels depicting cultures, virtues and defining moments in human history. The Roots of Humanity Foundation and Thanksgiving Point revealed the project during an event at the gardens attended by donors Alan and Karen Ashton, Tom and Gayle Holdman, King and Diane Husein and foundation president Max Brown.

"I don't think there's anything like it in the world, and the scale is one of the reasons why," Thanksgiving Point CEO McKay Christensen told the Daily Herald. "I think people and students and families in our state will drive for miles to come here to experience the art and stories and beauty."

Christensen said the building design is complete and a first round of donors has committed. Most or all of the project will be funded through private donations, he said, with the timeline dependent on how quickly remaining support comes in. The goal is to finish the facility in time for the Utah 2034 Winter Olympics.

No total cost has been disclosed.

The panels will be organized around seven themes the project calls "pillars of humanity": knowledge, creativity, faith, love, unity, freedom and courage, according to KSL.

Beyond the glass, plans call for meditation and reflection rooms, an interactive children's center, auditoriums and performance halls, multipurpose learning rooms and event spaces. Surrounding gardens will connect the artwork with nature, and balconies and viewing galleries will let visitors see the panels from multiple angles, according to Lehi Free Press.

Tom Holdman, who founded Holdman Studios in Lehi, conceived the idea in 2016 while finishing the "Roots of Knowledge" installation at Utah Valley University. That 200-foot stained-glass wall took 12 years to complete and was called "one of the most spectacular stained-glass windows made in the past century" by The Guardian after a London exhibition. Holdman Studios, located at 3001 North Thanksgiving Way on the Thanksgiving Point campus, has installed art glass in all 50 states and 40 countries.

King Firoz Husein, the project's lead donor and namesake, is CEO of SPAN Construction & Engineering, described as the nation's largest steel building construction company and the exclusive builder for Costco stores worldwide.

Brown said at the Aug. 11 event that Ashton Gardens is "a natural home for the Sphere of Light" and predicted it will draw visitors from across Utah and internationally.

Christensen said the facility will also host cultural events, educational programs and community gatherings, including lab spaces where children can learn about storytelling, art and production design. No groundbreaking date or permit filing has been announced.
