Lehi's girls tennis team won its own tournament Aug. 7-8, taking the inaugural Lehi Ladies Open on a tiebreaker after finishing 3-1 alongside Alta and Westlake in the six-team round-robin.
The Pioneers edged the field with 29 sets won, one more than Westlake and two more than Alta, according to Lehi Free Press. Wasatch finished 2-2, Provo went 1-3 and Maple Mountain was winless.
Junior Kinley Olson anchored the lineup at No. 1 Singles. In the lone team loss to Alta (a 3-2 defeat), Olson still took her court 6-1, 6-3. She reached the 6A state quarterfinals in Third Singles in October 2025 and has moved up the lineup this season.
The First Doubles pairing of senior Liberty Salcido and junior Claire Thatcher was a consistent force. Against Alta they cruised 6-1, 6-3, and they followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wasatch.
Senior Ella Gonzalez contributed a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2 Singles against Wasatch, while seniors Abigail Cox and Eden Waddell delivered the tournament's most dramatic result at No. 2 Doubles: a 6-7, 6-4, 14-12 comeback in the same match.
Against Provo, coach Glen Zobell rotated his singles players into different slots and still got a 4-1 win. Ella Gonzalez moved to No. 1 Singles and won 6-1, 6-1, sophomore Sophie Gonzalez won 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 Singles and sophomore Sahasya Sandepogu posted a 6-1, 6-2 result at No. 3 Singles.
"We've got some new and old faces on the team this year and we're excited with the unity we have so far," Zobell said. "We missed a couple of varsity players for these matches and are excited to see them in action over the next few weeks."
The JV squad went 3-1 as well.
Lehi tied for seventh at the 6A state tournament in October 2025 with 11 points and entered the Region 3 tournament as the fifth seed before finishing fourth. The Pioneers now face a tougher early-season gauntlet: Skyridge placed third at the 2025 state tournament and American Fork took second.
Region 3 play opened Tuesday, Aug. 18, against Skyridge. Lehi was scheduled at American Fork on Thursday, Aug. 20. All region matches start at 3 p.m.
