The Lehi Pioneers fell 42-0 to Mountain Ridge on Friday, Aug. 21, but the defense kept the game within reach deep into the second half before the Sentinels pulled away late.

"We played really well defensively and had a chance to go into the fourth quarter trailing just 14-27," Hadfield told Lehi Free Press. "All but two of our guys were playing in their second-ever varsity game and we made mental and physical mistakes that cost us."

Senior Paul Unga anchored the defense with six solo and 15 combined tackles. Senior Brody Downs added four solo and 11 total tackles. Senior Colt Kelley picked off a pass and finished with seven combined tackles, while sophomore Li'i Unga intercepted Mountain Ridge's first throw of the game at the 42-yard line and added eight total tackles and three deflections. Senior Porter Hobbs deflected a pass in the end zone and recorded seven combined tackles. Senior defensive lineman Sterling Fillmore led the team with four hurries.

The offense struggled to sustain drives against a Mountain Ridge defense that entered the game off a 41-26 Week 1 win over Skyridge. Hadfield said the Pioneers couldn't convert on third down, especially in long-yardage situations.

"We need to make sure we know our assignments and do more thinking and less reacting," he said.

Lehi did threaten late in the first half, driving into the red zone on completions from senior quarterback Briggs Jensen to Vince Ruelas and Cam Wren, followed by a Sam Verbecky run. A 33-yard field goal attempt sailed just right with one second remaining in the half.

Junior punter Breken Avina punted nine times with a long of 61 yards.

The Pioneers (1-1) now turn to the Panther Classic, where they'll face St. James Performance Academy out of Springfield, Virginia, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at West High School. St. James plays a national schedule that includes Paramus Catholic, IMG Academy and St. Frances Academy.
