The No. 1-ranked Lone Peak Knights, who entered the season seeking redemption after last year's title-game loss, opened their 2026 girls soccer campaign with a 4-1 penalty-shootout loss to Park City on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at home in Highland after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw through 100 minutes of regulation and overtime.

Junior forward Sami Schiffman rescued the Knights from a shutout with an equalizer in the 72nd minute, assisted by midfielder Macie Leavitt. But Park City goalkeeper Marley Filippone saved two Lone Peak penalty attempts in the shootout, and the Miners converted all four of their kicks to steal the result.

Park City's Elsa Dellenbach opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, assisted by Kelly Hough. Dellenbach, a senior who posted 16 goals and 13 assists last season, gave the Miners, ranked No. 5 in 4A, a lead they held deep into the second half.

Schiffman's goal eight minutes before the final whistle sent the match into overtime. The junior scored four goals as a sophomore on last year's squad that went 18-2 and reached the 6A championship game.

In the shootout, Park City went first. Dellenbach, Mallory Carter, Ashtyn Holder and Hailey Olsen all converted. Filippone then stopped Lone Peak's second and third attempts, and Olsen's kick clinched it.

"It wasn't easy and they never stopped pushing us in the game, but I'm incredibly proud of our group for their collective commitment," Park City coach Anthony DiCicco told the Deseret News. "Making all four penalties and Marley Filippone saving two was really nice, but their play in the 100 minutes was the most important part."

The loss echoes last season's lone regular-season defeat for the Knights, a shootout loss to Layton in late August 2025. Lone Peak won 10 straight after that setback and reached the state title game before falling to Syracuse 2-0.

Head coach Shantel Jolley, now in her ninth year leading the program, said in the Deseret News' Aug. 2 preseason capsules that the Knights would lean on younger players after graduating much of their senior class. Returning contributors Schiffman, Leavitt, senior midfielder Ada Villarreal, senior forward Sadie Stratton and junior defender Nya Piercy anchor the roster. Senior goalkeeper Scotlyn Schlosser started in net for her first varsity appearance.

Lone Peak travels to Green Canyon on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m. and to Ridgeline on Friday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m. before hosting Crimson Cliffs on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 3:30 p.m.
