Lehi's girls volleyball team opened Region 3 play with a 3-0 loss to undefeated Lone Peak on Tuesday, Sept. 8, after beating Davis 3-1 on the road Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Pioneers are 6-2 on the season, according to the Lehi Free Press. Third-year head coach Alise Bowles said the team has battled through early-season injuries, including a concussion that sidelined junior Aftyn Hurst, who had been filling the libero role.

"We ultimately beat ourselves with 34 unforced errors," Bowles said of the Lone Peak match. "We just can't play competitive ball when we make that many."

Lehi rallies past Davis

At Davis on Sept. 3, Lehi dropped the first set 17-25. Then the Pioneers rallied.

They took the final three sets 26-24, 25-21 and 25-12. Junior outside hitter Aliya Shewell led the comeback with 16 kills, three aces, eight digs and 22 serve-receives. Sophomore middle blocker Laken Bell added 15 kills, four aces, three block-assists and 15 digs. Junior middle blocker Lucy Lowe posted 12 kills and three block-assists, hitting .714 in the second set with five kills on seven attempts and zero errors.

The undefeated Knights controlled the match at home on Sept. 8, winning 25-19, 25-14 and 25-11. Shewell managed nine kills and seven digs, while Bell contributed five kills and 24 serve-receives. Hurst recorded a team-high nine digs with 18 serve-receives.

Bowles pointed to passing struggles and serving errors as the root of the lopsided result. The Pioneers committed 34 unforced errors in the match.

Injuries and standouts

Sophomore Isabel Garcia stepped into the libero role while Hurst was sidelined, averaging 2.7 digs per set. Bowles said several injured players have been cleared and will return as region play continues.

Bell has tallied 27 service aces through eight matches and is on pace to break her own record from last season. Shewell is hitting .215 on the year.

Lehi travels to American Fork on Thursday, Sept. 17, then visits Skyridge on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Both varsity matches are set for about 6:30 p.m.
