Lehi lost 66-0 to St. James Performance Academy of Springfield, Virginia, on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the inaugural Panther Classic at West High School.

St. James head coach Darryl Overton has 20 assistant coaches, and according to Lehi Free Press, virtually every starter on his roster holds Division I offers. Some have as many as 50 scholarship bids.

Lehi head coach Andy Hadfield welcomed the challenge. Other teams refused to play St. James, he said, but the Pioneers accepted.

"You learn a lot more from playing the best than you do from running over teams everyone expects you to beat," Hadfield said.

The Pioneers (1-2) struggled early, Hadfield said, but adjusted at halftime. Lehi reached the red zone twice in the second half without scoring. Hadfield called the opposing offensive line the best he has seen at the high school level, noting the skill players were "uncatchable" if they got a step ahead.

Senior linebacker Brody Downs led the defense with four solo and 10 total tackles plus a sack for a 14-yard loss. After the season-opening win over Maple Mountain on Aug. 14, Hadfield called Downs "a heat-seeking missile" who finds the ball whenever there's a hole. The label fit again.

Trey Nelson added a sack for a 10-yard loss and four tackles despite drawing frequent double teams, according to Hadfield. Sterling Fillmore posted three solo tackles among four total, including one for a loss. Senior linebacker Colt Kelley and sophomore defensive back Hendrix Cluff each recorded six tackles. Senior defensive back Porter Hobbs contributed five tackles and an interception.

On offense, Cam Wren paced the Pioneers with nine receptions for 71 yards and a 24-yard kickoff return. Senior wide receiver Kyson Butterfield added two catches for 12 yards. Lehi managed just 86 receiving yards and 38 rushing yards for the game, according to MaxPreps.

Hadfield said the defensive line held its own and praised Tautai Meredith, Fillmore, Carter Smith and Brody Mellor for absorbing pressure so the linebackers could make plays.

The loss drops Lehi to 1-2 after a 35-13 opening win over Maple Mountain and a 42-0 loss to Mountain Ridge on Aug. 21. The Pioneers host American Leadership Academy of Queen Creek, Arizona, on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
