Lehi residents can start burning yard debris on Tuesday, Sept. 15, but only after obtaining a $25 permit from the city.

The fall open burn season runs through Friday, Oct. 30, according to the Lehi Fire Department's burn permits page. Residents must complete the city's online burn permit application and pay the $25 annual fee before any burning begins.

The permit covers clippings, bushes, plants, prunings and dry grasses from property clean-up only. Large branches, tree stumps, tires, construction materials, plastics and household trash are all prohibited.

Day-of-burn rules

Before lighting a fire, residents must call the Utah County Burn Line at 801-851-2876 to confirm it is a "green burn day." They must also have their city application on hand.

Fires must stay at least 50 feet from any building, structure or combustible material. Smaller piles, under 3 feet in diameter and under 2 feet high, require a minimum 25-foot clearance. Someone must attend the fire at all times with a way to put it out, and all fires must be fully extinguished before dark.

Each permit is valid only at the address listed on the application and cannot be transferred to another person or property.

Violations

Burning without a permit or outside the rules is a class B misdemeanor under Lehi City Ordinance 8.12.080. Penalties can include a fine of up to $299, up to six months in the Utah County jail, or both.
