Lehi Legacy Center members can play indoor pickleball five days a week starting Monday, Nov. 2, after residents asked the city to add the sport.

The new winter schedule adds 13 hours of weekly pickleball at the center, Lehi Free Press reported. Play is free for annual pass holders, and members can bring their own equipment.

The effort traces to Sarie Christiansen, a part-time Legacy Center employee who asked the Lehi City Council to add pickleball during its Sept. 8 meeting. Christiansen noticed a need at the center and told the council that volleyball had already brought positive results there.

"I think pickleball would do that ten times over," she told the council, according to Lehi Free Press.

Several other residents echoed the request in September. The city then developed the indoor schedule to cover the winter months.

The response was quick. Less than two months after the September meeting, the schedule is set.

Schedule

Indoor pickleball hours are:

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Wednesday and Friday: 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Retired veteran Lyle Swapp, a Lehi resident, told Lehi Free Press the Legacy Center has helped his transition from military service. He called pickleball "one sport I can still do" and said he looks forward to making new friends on the court.

Sarah Colqui, another Lehi resident, told Lehi Free Press she had been playing for a few years but found it hard to coordinate a group. She said she looks forward to dropping in during scheduled hours and playing with regulars she already sees at the center.

How to join

The Legacy Center offers monthly and annual membership plans for individuals, couples and families, according to the city's website. A single daily visit for adults ages 12 to 59 costs $6. Prospective members can sign up online or in person at the front desk.
