Highland City closed the Angel's Gate Trailhead through the end of October while contractors build a safer trail corridor through a new subdivision under construction nearby.
The city announced the closure on its official X account on Thursday, Sept. 17, asking trail users to plan alternate routes until the work wraps up. No specific reopening date has been set beyond "the end of October."
The trailhead, located at the end of Lighthouse Drive off Beacon Hill Boulevard, sits near the border of Highland, Alpine and Draper. It serves as the upper access point for both the Hog Hollow trail and the Hog Hollow Creek trail, which connect to Draper's Corner Canyon trail system on Traverse Mountain. The routes are popular with hikers, mountain bikers and local high school mountain bike teams.
Construction near the trailhead is not new. Highland City first warned trail users about heavy machinery in the area in December 2025, when work began near the trailhead by Hogs Hollow. At that time, the city said a bridge over a gas line easement would improve trail access and was expected to be finished by spring 2026.
Alternate access points
Highland City did not name specific alternate trailheads in its announcement. According to a UtahMountainBiking.com trail guide, nearby options include:
- Beacon Hill Park trailhead on Beacon Hill Boulevard, about half a mile north of Westfield Road, which connects to the bottom of the Hog Hollow Creek trail.
- Lower Hog Hollow access via a metal gate on the north side of Westfield Road, roughly 0.7 miles west of the stop sign where Westfield ends on 200 North in Alpine.
- Fort Canyon Ranch trailhead, about 3.9 miles from Angel's Gate by road, offering an alternate eastern entry to the trail system.
