Junior running back Cam Bryce ran for 209 yards on 21 carries as Lehi beat Weber 28-14 on Friday, Sept. 11, in Pleasant View.

The Pioneers trailed 7-0 after Weber quarterback Carter Payne hit Creed Devries on a 25-yard touchdown pass less than four minutes in. Senior kicker Finn McBride answered with a 28-yard field goal, and senior quarterback Briggs Jensen found Cam Wren for a 16-yard touchdown on the final play of the first quarter to put Lehi ahead 10-7 for good.

Sophomore Hendrix Cluff blew the game open in the second quarter. He fielded a pooch punt near midfield and returned it 50 yards for a score, then took a second punt 58 yards to the end zone. His 108 punt-return yards earned a spot on the Deseret News list of top Week 5 performances statewide.

"My confidence was sky high after the first touchdown and I wanted to do that again," Cluff told the Deseret News after the game. "I got a good stiff arm in and made a few guys miss and thankfully was able to get in the end zone again."

A tipped pass returned 70 yards by Weber cut the halftime deficit to 22-14, but the Pioneer defense locked down from there. Sophomore defensive back Eli Cole intercepted two passes in the second half, one in the end zone and one at the 5-yard line. Senior linebacker Colt Kelley blocked a field-goal attempt in the third quarter and finished with eight tackles, three hurries and three pass deflections.

Senior Porter Hobbs dragged down the Weber quarterback at the 2-yard line in the third quarter to prevent another score.

Bryce capped the night with a 9-yard rushing touchdown with 8:25 left in the fourth quarter. Lehi's ground game totaled 312 yards, with senior Sam Verbecky adding 58 yards on 11 carries. Jensen finished with 134 passing yards and 25 rushing yards. Senior lineman Micah Bateman was credited with opening holes on multiple scoring drives, the Lehi Free Press reported.

Senior linebacker Brody Downs led all tacklers with 10. Senior defensive lineman Sterling Fillmore recorded six hurries and four tackles.

Head coach Andy Hadfield told the Lehi Free Press he challenged his skill players after the win. He said the defense is good enough to keep Lehi in any game but the offense needs to finish more chances, noting nine batted-down passes and four or five drops.

On the final possession, Vince Ruelas picked up 20 yards on a fake on third-and-1 at the Weber 44. The Pioneers then took a knee rather than try to score again.

Lehi hosts rival Skyridge on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Region 3 opener.
