Alpine Mayor Carla Merrill proclaimed Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution Week, the city announced Wednesday, Sept. 16, on its official social media account.

The proclamation, made in partnership with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), encourages residents to study and reflect on the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. Thursday, Sept. 17, is also observed nationally as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.

Constitution Week dates to 1956, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a congressional resolution the DAR had petitioned for a year earlier. The observance marks the anniversary of the Constitution's framing in September 1787.
