Kaneal Sweetwyne left Skyridge High School as one of Lehi's most productive quarterbacks in recent memory. Now the 6-foot-4, 205-pound dual-threat signal-caller is competing for playing time at the University of Colorado under head coach Deion Sanders, with fall camp set to open Monday, Aug. 3.

Sweetwyne's path to Boulder was anything but direct. He committed to BYU on Feb. 4, 2025, announcing the pledge on social media after a senior season in which he completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,675 yards and 19 touchdowns with 16 interceptions while rushing for 930 yards and 10 more scores across 13 games for the Falcons.

He backed off that BYU commitment in August 2025 and eventually committed to Colorado and Sanders on Jan. 11, 2026, according to the Daily Camera. The three-star prospect was rated the No. 75 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class.

The early returns in Boulder have been encouraging. During Colorado's spring team draft, an innovation in which players picked teammates for competitive practices, Sweetwyne was selected No. 1 overall by a squad captained by cornerback RJ Johnson and tight ends Zach Atkins and Brady Kopetz, according to Sports Illustrated.

He was picked first.

"It's an open competition for every position," Sanders told reporters April 8. "You want every position to have pressure applied; like, you want those battles."

Former BYU and NFL quarterback Zach Wilson, now with the New Orleans Saints, discussed Sweetwyne's situation in a Deseret News interview published Thursday, July 30. Wilson said he advised the young quarterback to find a program where he could compete, adding that Colorado is giving Sweetwyne that opportunity even with redshirt freshman Julian "JuJu" Lewis projected as the starter.

ESPN projects Lewis as Colorado's QB1 for 2026, with Sweetwyne listed behind Lewis and Dominiq Ponder. Still, the freshman's career numbers at Skyridge speak to his upside: 6,149 passing yards, 451 completions, 53 passing touchdowns, 1,956 rushing yards, and 26 rushing touchdowns over his varsity career, according to the Colorado athletics roster page.

Colorado opens its 2026 season looking to rebound from a 3-9 campaign, with more than 50 newcomers on the roster. Sweetwyne and the Buffaloes begin fall camp Monday, Aug. 3, the same day Skyridge's fall sports season kicks off back in Lehi.
