A female hiker fell off a cliff near the summit of Mount Timpanogos on Monday, Oct. 26, suffering serious injuries that required a helicopter rescue.
The woman slipped while near the summit and landed on a small ledge, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Ray Ormond with the sheriff's office told KUTV that crews spotted her from the agency's airplane.
Her identity was not released.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) sent a helicopter to hoist the hiker from the ledge and flew her to a waiting ambulance, Ormond said. The Lone Peak Fire District then transported her to Utah Valley Hospital. ABC4 reported that both a DPS helicopter and a Lifeflight helicopter were in a parking lot on Timpanogos highways during the operation.
The sheriff's office described the hiker as "badly injured" in a social media post about the rescue, according to Gephardt Daily. The specific trail the hiker was using has not been identified publicly.
The Lone Peak Fire District confirmed a search-and-rescue operation was underway on the mountain that day. The rescue involved coordination between the sheriff's office, DPS and the fire district.
In its social media post, the Utah County Sheriff's Office urged hikers to exercise extreme caution at high elevations where snow and ice are present. The agency also thanked the partner agencies involved in the operation.
"We are extremely grateful for the outcome of today's rescue and our awesome partners," the sheriff's office wrote, as quoted by Gephardt Daily.
The sheriff's office has not released further details about the hiker's condition or what trail she was on at the time of the fall.
