Alpine City Cemetery will hold a wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 19, honoring veterans buried there as part of National Wreaths Across America Day.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Color Guard Scout Troop Unit 10G and the Alpine Youth Council will place seven wreaths, one for each branch of the military and one for prisoners of war and those missing in action, according to Alpine City's announcement.

As volunteers place each wreath, they will pause to say the veteran's name aloud.

The wreaths are provided through volunteer groups of veterans, truckers and the Pony Express Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The city said the ceremony emulates wreath-laying traditions at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Alpine's event is part of a nationwide effort. According to Arlington National Cemetery's website, the cemetery will be one of more than 5,500 participating locations nationwide for the 2026 Wreaths Across America Day.

Anyone who attends can bring a personal wreath to lay after the formal ceremony. Residents who want to volunteer should call Marilyn Thomsen at 801-787-8086.

Wreath sponsorship

Residents can also sponsor a wreath for a specific veteran's grave at Alpine Cemetery or at another participating cemetery for $17 each. Orders must be placed through Alpine City's website by Dec. 1.

Highland City held its own Wreaths Across America ceremony at Highland City Cemetery in December 2025. Wreaths were presented for each branch of the armed forces, according to a post on the city's X account.
