Families heading to the Highland Fling on Saturday, August 1, have a new reason to explore Heritage Park: a self-guided Passport to America Challenge that rewards the first 250 finishers with a limited-edition commemorative pin.
Highland City announced the activity on its official social media accounts on Saturday, July 25. The challenge is part of the broader America 250 Celebration running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, timed to the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence's signing. Most delegates signed the document on August 2, 1776, in Philadelphia.
How it works
Participants pick up a passport booklet at the America 250 Information Booth, then visit stops scattered throughout the festival to collect checkmarks. Once the passport is complete, they return it to the booth. The first 250 people to finish receive a limited-edition America 250 commemorative pin.
The challenge is separate from both the Kids Adventure Guide scavenger hunt and the Colonial Heritage Foundation's Historical Discovery Booths, which we covered Tuesday, July 28. According to the Highland City website, guests taking part will journey through key moments and milestones in American history as they move between stops.
Saturday's America 250 schedule
The Grand Parade kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by a Mayor's Welcome at 11 a.m. and an America 250 Celebratory Presentation at 11:30 a.m. on the main stage. Colonial Heritage Foundation demonstrations (including a replica of the 1776 printing press used to produce the Declaration of Independence, colonial-era chocolate making, and traditional spinning and weaving) run alongside the passport challenge throughout the afternoon.
Rod and Suzanne Mann serve as this year's Grand Marshals. Rod Mann previously served on the Highland City Council and as mayor; Suzanne Mann chaired the Highland Fling Baby Celebration for seven years.
More Highland Fling highlights
The festival opens Thursday, July 30, and runs through Saturday, August 1, at Heritage Park (10400 N. Alpine Hwy, Highland). The Medallion Hunt also runs all three days, with a new clue released each morning at 10 a.m. on the official Highland Fling Facebook and Instagram pages.
The finder takes home a $200 cash prize.
