Two golfers who grew up in Alpine and Highland are competing this week in one of the biggest professional golf tournaments in the state.

Carson Lundell of Alpine and Zac Jones of Highland, both former BYU golfers, earned spots in the Korn Ferry Tour's Utah Championship at Ogden Golf & Country Club. The tournament runs Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 2, with a $1 million purse and $180,000 going to the champion.

Neither had a guaranteed spot.

Both earned their way in through a Monday qualifier at Glen Eagle Golf Club on July 28, where Jones fired a 10-under 62 and Lundell shot a 9-under 63, according to the Deseret News.

Lundell arrived at the qualifier running on fumes. Less than 24 hours earlier, he had won the 2026 Inspirato Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, shooting a 20-under 264 across four rounds to claim a $50,000 prize. It was a breakthrough after two sixth-place finishes at the same event.

"It means the world," Lundell said after the Colorado Open victory, as reported by Cougar Sports Media. "This is a big event, and I've taken sixth twice."

Lundell is also a recipient of the Tony Finau Foundation grant, which KSL reported contributes $30,000 to $45,000 per year to help cover expenses for Utah-connected professional golfers. Recipients must stay in the program at least two years.

Jones, a Lone Peak High School graduate, left BYU after the 2024-25 season and turned professional. Golf Channel listed him as a "big loss" for the Cougars heading into this past college season.

The 156-player field includes seven golfers with Utah ties. Lundell's Round 1 tee time is 9:15 a.m. Thursday off the No. 10 tee. Jones tees off at 2:30 p.m. off the No. 1 tee.

A top-25 finish would earn either player entry into the following week's Korn Ferry Tour event in Omaha, Nebraska. The Korn Ferry Tour serves as the primary pathway to the PGA Tour.

Golf Channel coverage begins at 4 p.m. MDT Thursday.

The Utah Championship, presented by Zions Bank and International Health, is in its 35th year. Last year's event at the same Ogden course was won by former Duke player Julian Suri at 18-under.
