Mike Smith, a Republican, received 71,915 votes, 100% of the votes counted, with all 533 of 533 reporting units reporting, according to unofficial results from Utah County Clerk, Elections. Smith was the only candidate listed on the ballot. He has served as Utah County sheriff since 2018 and will continue in the role.
What was at stake
The Utah County Sheriff's Office serves more than 371,000 registered voters across the county, according to the Utah County Clerk's Office. The office handles law enforcement, jail operations and victim services. County commission minutes from June show the sheriff's office projected serving 1,122 victim-services clients in 2026, up from 956 in 2025.
The key issues:
- Smith, on his campaign website, said he played a role in drafting a Utah County resolution affirming Second Amendment protections and helped secure signatures from all 29 Utah sheriffs on a document pledging to safeguard constitutional rights.
- Smith's campaign also said he was instrumental in efforts to place the Office of Sheriff under explicit protection in the Utah Constitution, a measure Utah voters approved.
- In a Dec. 31, 2025, public statement, Smith addressed a disruption at a Planning Commission meeting over proposed data center development. He said deputies escorted individuals who refused to leave and that one person allegedly assaulted a deputy.
The result means Smith will serve another term leading the county's largest law enforcement agency.
A little history
Smith is a Pleasant Grove High School graduate who joined the Pleasant Grove Police Department as an officer in 1994, according to BallotReady. He rose to chief of police there from 2012 to 2018. He also served as a reserve deputy with the Utah County Sheriff's Office from 2006 to 2012 and led the Utah County Metro SWAT Team from 1998 to 2016, according to his campaign website.
Smith graduated from the FBI National Academy's 246th Session in 2011. He holds an associate's degree in criminal justice from Utah Valley University. He has served as president of the Utah Sheriffs' Association and as a member of the Utah Federalism Commission and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program Committee, according to his campaign site.
What's next
The results remain unofficial until the canvass is complete. Utah County's canvass deadline is Nov. 17, 2026, according to the Utah election calendar. Under Utah law, recounts are automatic only in the event of a tie vote, and a losing candidate may request a recount if the margin is 0.25% or less of the total vote.
