Corey K. Astill, a Republican, won the Utah County Clerk/Auditor race with 59,019 votes, or 67.8%, according to unofficial results from Utah County Clerk, Elections. Russ J. Rampton of the Forward Party received 27,983 votes, or 32.2%. All 533 reporting units reported, with 87,002 votes counted. Astill replaces outgoing Clerk Aaron Davidson, who lost his Republican primary bid earlier this year.
What was at stake
The Utah County Clerk/Auditor oversees elections, public records and financial audits for more than 371,000 registered voters across the county. A September 2026 legislative audit, first reported by the Deseret News, found that Utah County had only partially implemented recommendations from a 2024 election review. Auditors noted that some volunteers skipped state-required training and that the office lacked a system to track election requirements.
The key issues:
- Election administration: Astill listed election integrity, signature verification and accurate voter rolls as priorities in a Lehi Free Press candidate questionnaire. Rampton did not respond to the questionnaire.
- Staffing and preparation: Astill pledged to end long lines and ballot shortages at polling places, according to the same questionnaire.
- Proof-of-citizenship requirements: Astill said in a candidate questionnaire that the existing system of verifying citizenship at voter registration works.
The winner will take charge of running elections and managing county records for residents across Alpine, Highland, Cedar Hills, Lehi and the rest of Utah County.
A little history
Astill, a Lehi resident, won the Republican primary on June 23. He holds a law degree from Georgetown University and a political science degree from Brigham Young University. His work history includes roles as a U.S. Senate legislative director and staff director, a vice president at the Business Roundtable and co-owner of autism treatment clinics, according to his candidate questionnaire. He had not previously held elected office.
Davidson, the outgoing clerk, lost his reelection bid in the June primary. A legislative audit criticized his office for not designating a separate election official to oversee a petition-signature audit while Davidson was on the ballot, according to the Deseret News.
Rampton ran on the Forward Party ticket. He did not respond to candidate questionnaire requests from the Lehi Free Press.
What's next
The results remain unofficial until the county canvass is complete. Utah County officials must finish the canvass by Nov. 17, according to Democracy Sentry. The state board of canvassers meets Nov. 23. Under Utah law, a candidate may request a state-funded recount if the margin is 0.25% or less of total votes cast. Astill's margin of 35.6 percentage points is well above that threshold.
